What are the different types of green roofs?

Green roofing is a smarter way to build for the future. From improving air quality to reducing energy costs, green roofs can transform unused rooftop space into something valuable for both people and the planet. Let us help you become part of the change.

What we provide:

  • Sedum systems
  • Wildflower green roof systems
  • Biodiverse green roof systems
  • Blue roof systems
  • Brown roof systems
  • Modular green roof systems
  • Bio-solar green roofs

Sedum Systems

As cities expand and environmental concerns continue to grow, there is increasing demand for sustainable construction solutions. One innovation leading this shift is the sedum roofing system — a lightweight, low-maintenance solution that is quick and easy to install while supporting biodiversity.

Sedum systems are typically installed using a pre-grown blanket laid over a shallow substrate, providing an effective and visually appealing ground cover.

Wildflower Systems

Wildflower green roofing systems are ideal for projects that aim to stand out both environmentally and aesthetically. Unlike sedum roofs, which offer a more uniform, low-maintenance finish, wildflower systems create a vibrant and dynamic landscape.

An attractive mix of plant species transforms sterile rooftops into living, multi-layered ecosystems. A key benefit of this approach is its seasonal variation, with different wildflowers blooming throughout the year — creating a roofscape that evolves from bright and colourful in summer to more subtle, natural tones in winter.

Biodiverse Systems

Biodiverse roofs feature a growing substrate laid at varying depths to encourage a wide range of plant species to establish. These roofs can either be pre-planted or left to develop naturally over time.

Additional elements such as woodpiles, stones, boulders, bird boxes and bug hotels can be incorporated to create habitats, encouraging wildlife to thrive and making full use of the available space.

Blue Roof Systems

Blue roof systems are designed to manage stormwater at its source by temporarily storing rainwater at roof level rather than allowing it to run off immediately.

This approach helps reduce the risk of flooding and supports SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) requirements. Blue roofs can also be combined with green roofs to deliver both environmental and water management benefits.

Brown Roof Systems

Brown roof systems are designed to replicate the natural, barren environment of a brownfield site. Unlike traditional green roofs, they are intended to self-colonise over time through natural processes such as wind and bird dispersal.

These systems are typically created using material from the building site, which is treated to remove impurities before being reused as the growing medium. This allows indigenous plant species to establish naturally, creating a truly site-specific habitat.

ICB can provide the necessary calculations to support system design and performance requirements.

Modular Green Roof Systems

Modular green roof systems use pre-prepared trays or units that can be installed quickly and efficiently. This makes them ideal for projects requiring a fast and straightforward installation process.

These systems offer flexibility and consistency, providing an efficient and eco-friendly solution while still supporting plant growth and biodiversity.

Bio-Solar Green Systems

Bio-solar roofs combine green roofing with solar PV technology, delivering both environmental and energy benefits.

The vegetation layer helps regulate roof surface temperature, which can improve the efficiency of solar panels, as performance can reduce when panels overheat. At the same time, the system contributes to biodiversity and reduces the urban heat island effect.

Why choose green roofing?

  • Improve air quality
  • Reduce energy costs
  • Maximise unused space
  • Manage stormwater
  • Enhance biodiversity

The momentum to specify green roofing is continuing to grow across the UK, with building owners seeking more environmentally responsible solutions and designers looking to enhance project sustainability.

ICB Projects’ green roof systems are supported by full technical and design expertise, including assistance with system selection and planting choices where required. Our solutions are carefully developed to deliver long-term performance and a high-quality finish that building owners can be proud of.

Be part of the change. Be greener. Be smarter.
